This Lisle Flywheel Turner Comes in Clutch

Cars with manual transmissions are unequivocally more fun than their automatically shifted counterparts. The only downside: Clutch discs are wear items, and that means you might have to get your hands dirty once every blue moon. That’s no fun, but a fair trade for the joy of rowing your own gears. Disassembly is straightforward: Put a car on the lift, drop the driveshaft (or driveshafts for you transaxle types), pull the transmission and get down into the clutch. Lifting the pressure plate and flywheel is as easy as grabbing your impact gun. Putting it back together, well, that isn’t as easy.

Sure, you could grab your impact and go to town on your flywheel and pressure plate bolts, but these fasteners have torque specs for a reason. The added benefit of not snapping a bolt in your crankshaft flange or flywheel is also worth breaking out the torque wrench. Now, you just need to find someone to close both eyes, turn their head away and hope the prybar they're holding onto your starter ring gear doesn’t slip. Or, if you’re lucky, have a breaker bar and socket keeping your engine from spinning as you apply torque to the bolts holding your flywheel to your engine, or your pressure plate to your flywheel. The best bet? Drop less than $30 and buy the right tool.

This Lisle flywheel turner does double duty: It can hold the flywheel while applying torque and can turn the flywheel while you’re putting the fasteners back in place. The spring-loaded tool helps you hold the ring gear with one hand, while your other hand takes care of the torque wrench. It still might be easier to have a buddy hold the tool, but you can get the job done by yourself. This Lisle flywheel turner works by having essentially two prybars built into one tool, which gives you a stable base to hold the flywheel.

Now, let’s be honest: This isn’t as nice as the A144A you can get off the Snap-On truck. It’s not as comfortable and not as robust. It is, however, only a fifth of the price. That makes it an obvious bargain and a must-have if you’re the type to replace a clutch on a Friday afternoon. You can also use this to hold a flexplate while bringing it up to its required torque spec, or while installing a harmonic balancer or crank pulley.
