Quick freeze possible in Reno's North Valleys; some clouds for eclipse

Cold will make a quick stop Wednesday night and Thursday in Northern Nevada. Freezing temperatures are expected to miss Reno proper, but they’ll be possible in the North Valleys.

And clouds may get in the way of eclipse viewing Saturday. Freezing And Refrigeration

“There’s just a whole bunch of colder air moving in from the north, northwest,” said Justin Collins of the National Weather Service office in Reno.

That’s why temperatures have dropped, and Mt. Rose saw a bit of snow Tuesday night. Freezing is expected in northeastern California and along the Sierra ridge.

“Anywhere around Reno, it’s going to be a little bit harder to get down to the 32-degree mark,” Collins said.

That’s because some upper-level clouds are expected to inhibit the cold temperatures a bit.

Cold Springs and Lemmon Valley could freeze “just because of the higher elevation,” he said.

Temperatures will return to the mid to upper 70s during the day and almost 50 at night by the weekend.

“It’s basically just a quick dip (in temperature) and then it’ll slowly rise back up,” Collins said.

Weather models show that it won’t be a perfectly clear sky in Reno when the “ring of fire” solar eclipse happens around 9:20 a.m. Saturday.

“I don’t think it’s going to be completely overcast but I think there will be a few clouds lingering in the sky Saturday,” Collins said.

As for the most cloud-free place to watch the eclipse relatively nearby, he recommended Lovelock and Winnemucca.

Cryogenic Tunnel Freezer “I don’t expect any more cloud cover” in Reno, Collins said. “I expect the trend to be fewer clouds heading into the weekend.”
