More than 600 Lubbock-based employers received at least $150,000 from the federal government this Spring, when payments were made from the federal government to keep people employed as the economy shut down.
Local businesses, churches, nonprofits and private schools were all listed on data released by the Small Business Administration this week. The data shows who received funds in a certain dollar range, but does not specify the amount. Electrical Supplies Inc
The majority, 364 Lubbock-based employers, received between $150,000 and $350,000. Another 180 employers received between $350,000 and $1 million from the federal government. And 36 businesses received between $1 and $2 million.
Another 25 local businesses received between $2 million and $5 million.
Five Lubbock businesses received between $5 million and $10 million from the federal government: Abuelo’s International, Paradigm Investment Group, Parkhill Smith and Cooper, Pate Trucking Company and X-Fab Texas.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, 378 businesses across the country received between $5 million and $10 million, and five of those businesses were based in Lubbock.
Among the businesses to receive between $2 million to $5 million were Alderson Enterprises, Plains Cotton Cooperative Association, Pyco Industries and Scoggin-Dicken.

The data is not complete, however. The Small Business Administration — the branch of the Treasury Department administering the program — did not release information for loans smaller than $150,000. Only about 15% of loans were for $150,000 or more.
The Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program was meant to help small businesses impacted by the coronavirus.
The loans, one of a few financial assistance opportunities offered by the federal department and approved by the CARES Act, incentivized employers to keep workers on the payroll while many businesses are shut down or operating differently during the coronavirus pandemic, according to previous articles written in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
The funds could be used for payroll, rent, mortgage or utilities, and could be forgiven if no employees were laid off over eight weeks.
It’s clear many organizations applied, whether churches, nonprofits and private schools.
At least 15 churches in Lubbock received PPP funds. Trinity Church of Lubbock, First Baptist Church of Lubbock, Lubbock Church on the Rock and Southcrest Baptist Church of Lubbock received more than $350,000.
Lubbock Christian University received between $2 million and $5 million. Lubbock Christian School, All Saints Episcopal School and Christ the King Cathedral received funds as well.
The Texas Tech Alumni Association got between $350,000-$1 million, the Texas Home School Coalition Association got between $150,000 and $350,000, as did the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.
Law firms, different health-related fields, building parts and manufacturing, investment and holding companies, car dealerships, insurance companies and media organizations all received funds. Ramar Communications received between $350,000-$1 million.
Many oil and gas businesses received federal funds as well.
Among the nonprofits to receive funds through the PPP grants were Catholic Charities, Open Door, CASA of the South Plains and the South Plains Food Bank.
Monday's release is the most comprehensive list so far of businesses and nonprofit organizations that received money from the Paycheck Protection Program. Companies were allowed to apply for the loans if they were negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic. If business owners comply with federal mandates — namely, retaining staff — the taxpayer-funded loans will turn into grants and will not need to be repaid.
In total, the federal government disclosed the names of 52,150 Texas businesses and nonprofits that received the loans. Nearly 46,000 of those loans went to businesses or organizations that received less than $1 million.
