  MOJAVE - A six story conveyor belt system at the Golden Queen mine caught fire on the evening of December 13th; the incident occurred at approximately 9:15pm.

  According to a Kern County Fire Department incident report, firefighters were dispatched to the Golden Queen Mine located just off of Hwy. 14 outside of Mojave just after 9pm. When Kern County Fire Station 14 firefighters out of Mojave arrived, they were faced with a six-story tall conveyor belt system that was fully engulfed in flames. The rubbers, oils, hydraulic fluid and flammable parts of the machinery were all on fire and personnel from the Golden Queen mine were unable to contain the blaze as the fire ran down the conveyor belts, threatening to spread to connecting sections. Officials from the Golden Queen Mine directed an attack on the blaze, while firefighters immediately pulled hose lines and started containing the fire in order to keep it from spreading.   Golden Queen Mine personnel stated that while they had suffered $2 million worth of damage, the actions of the firefighters saved an astounding $130 million worth of property. The cause of the fire was determined to be due to welding, according to mine officials. No injuries were reported, and all personnel were accounted for.
